Shocking details have emerged about the alleged mistreatment Greta Thunberg is experiencing while being held in Israel.

Greta Thunberg was taken into custody by Israeli authorities as she attempted to deliver aid to people in Gaza.

Thunberg has reported that she faced ‘mistreatment’ during her time in Israeli detention.

The Swedish environmental activist reached out to officials back home, claiming she was treated poorly after being taken from a flotilla that was delivering aid to Gaza.

She was detained amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine, although figures like Donald Trump have suggested that a ceasefire might be on the horizon.

In her messages to officials, Thunberg mentioned that she was not the only one enduring terrible conditions and that she was allegedly made to take pictures while holding flags, the identities of which have not yet been verified.

According to emails reviewed by The Guardian, the Swedish foreign ministry sent a message to Thunberg’s family to inform them about her situation.

An official who visited the 22-year-old reported that she was kept ‘in a cell infested with bedbugs, with inadequate food and water’.

The email confirmed that the Swedish embassy had successfully met with Thunberg, stating: “She reported feeling dehydrated. She has not received enough food and water.

“She also mentioned developing rashes that she believes were caused by bedbugs. She described the treatment as harsh and said she had been sitting for extended periods on hard surfaces.”

Thunberg expressed concern about whether images of her and the other detainee had been made public, with claims of her poor detention conditions corroborated by at least two other members of the flotilla who were also captured by Israeli forces, before being released on Saturday (4 October).

Journalist Lorenzo D’Agostino, who was part of the flotilla, also stated that the Swedish activist was ‘wrapped in the Israeli flag and displayed like a trophy’.

However, the Israeli embassy has rejected these claims as ‘complete lies’, asserting: “All detainees from the Hamas-Sumud provocation were provided with water, food, and toilets; they were not denied legal counsel, and all their legal rights, including access to medical care, were fully respected.”

It has since been reported that Thunberg is anticipated to be among over 70 individuals of various nationalities leaving Israel today (6 October).

Thunberg was part of 437 activists, parliamentarians, and lawyers who formed the Global Sumud Flotilla, which included more than 40 vessels aimed at delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza while trying to circumvent Israel’s 16-year naval blockade in the region.

Reports indicated that Israeli forces intercepted and captured everyone on board all the vessels before detaining them at a high-security prison in the Negev desert known as Ketziot, or Ansar III.

Solitary confinement is utilized for Palestinian security prisoners who are deemed to be involved in militant or terrorist activities.

This marked the second occasion Thunberg was arrested alongside other flotilla members, as she attempted a similar action earlier this year, which resulted in her arrest and subsequent deportation.

A Swedish official mentioned in an email that Thunberg was requested by Israeli authorities to sign a document, although ‘she expressed uncertainty about what the document entailed and did not wish to sign anything she did not comprehend’, the email noted.

The email also mentioned that she had access to legal counsel.
