Arturo Gatti Jr Has Died Aged 17

The boxing world is mourning the loss of Arturo Gatti Jr, who has died at the age of 17.

The teenager, son of Canadian boxing legend Arturo Gatti, passed away in Mexico on Tuesday, sending shockwaves through the sporting community.

Chuck Zito, who served as bodyguard to Gatti Sr throughout his career, was among the first to share the devastating news on Wednesday.

Writing on Instagram alongside photographs of both father and son, he expressed his condolences to the Gatti family, including Arturo Sr’s mother, sisters, brothers, and daughter Sophia.

Former WBC light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal posted an emotional tribute on social media, writing: “Sixteen years after losing his father, the world loses another Gatti. The son of a legendary fighter, one legacy. Both gone too soon. May they reunite in peace. My heart is heavy; life can be unfair sometimes.”

Gatti Jr’s long-time coach, Moe Latif, confirmed the tragic news, stating simply: “It is unfortunately not a rumor or a joke. Arturo is gone.” Latif had reportedly been preparing to travel to Mexico this week to continue training with his young protégé.

Fight fans across social media expressed their shock and sadness. One wrote: “Awful news. Remember seeing a video of Mike Tyson watching young Gatti hit the heavy bag. The way he threw his punches was like watching a mini version of his dad. My heart goes out to his family.”

From an early age, Arturo Gatti Jr showed a passion for following in his father’s footsteps.

He first laced up boxing gloves at just six years old and went on to compete in several amateur bouts, displaying natural talent and dedication to the sport.

The teenager developed a close relationship with boxing icon Mike Tyson and trained seriously with the goal of one day turning professional.

His coach, Moe Latif, had been working with him for years, guiding his development as a fighter.

In 2019, the young boxer spoke about his ambitions, saying: “I would like to have a career like my father. Our styles are very similar. I have the same warrior side as him.”

Those who watched him train remarked on the striking similarities between his style and that of his legendary father. Like Gatti Sr, the young fighter showed the heart of a warrior in the ring.

Just a fortnight before his death, Gatti Jr posted an AI-generated image on Instagram showing himself standing alongside his late father, both dressed in boxing gear.

Arturo Gatti Sr was one of boxing’s most iconic figures, a former two-weight world champion whose career was defined by his unforgettable trilogy of fights with great rival Micky Ward. Those battles are considered among the greatest in boxing history.

Tragically, Arturo Jr was born just 10 months before his father’s death in July 2009. Gatti Sr was found dead while on vacation in Brazil with his wife, Amanda Rodrigues and infant son.

The circumstances surrounding his death have remained controversial for 16 years.

Despite growing up without his father, Arturo Jr carried forward the Gatti name with pride and determination, seeking to honor his father’s legacy through his own boxing career.

Arturo Gatti Jr was in Mexico with his mother, Amanda Rodrigues, at the time of his death on Tuesday.

According to reports, the teenager was found hanged in an apartment by a neighbor.

The loss comes 16 years after his father’s mysterious death in Brazil, which was ultimately ruled a suicide by hanging, though many of Gatti Sr’s family and friends have never accepted that conclusion.

It is currently unclear whether foul play is suspected in the teenager’s death, per the Independent.
