Over $1 million raised for ‘hero’ bystander who tackled alleged Bondi Beach gunman during terror attack

A crowd gathered at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Sunday, December 14, to mark Hanukkah. Then violence shattered the afternoon. Two gunmen opened fire on families near the sand. Authorities have since described the shooting as a terrorist incident. At least 15 people died, and many others suffered injuries.

In the middle of the chaos, one bystander moved toward danger. Ahmed Al Ahmed, a 43-year-old fruit shop owner and father of two, saw a chance to stop one of the shooters. First, he took cover behind parked cars. Next, he rushed the gunman from behind. He grabbed him, wrestled for the rifle, and forced the weapon away. Witness video later spread quickly online. Many people credit his actions with helping others escape.

However, courage came at a cost. Ahmed sustained gunshot wounds to his arm and hand. He now recovers in hospital, and his family says doctors expect him to heal.

Afterward, strangers turned gratitude into support. A GoFundMe campaign for Ahmed surged past $1 million. Reports say investor Bill Ackman contributed $99,000. NSW Premier Chris Minns also visited Ahmed in hospital and publicly thanked him, calling him a real-life hero.

In a week defined by grief, Ahmed’s split-second choice has become a rare point of unity.
