Holocaust survivor and 10-year-old girl among Bondi Beach victims identified

Australia woke to heartbreak after a deadly shooting struck a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach on Sunday, December 14. Authorities say at least 15 people died and dozens suffered injuries. Investigators still work to confirm every victim’s identity. However, families have begun sharing names as they grieve.

First, relatives identified a 10-year-old girl named Matilda. With the family’s permission, her name and photos appeared publicly. Her aunt, Lina, shared a simple message online that captured the weight of the loss. Matilda’s school community also responded. Harmony Russian School of Sydney said it would hold her memory close. Doctors rushed Matilda to Sydney Children’s Hospital that night. Sadly, she later died.

Next, loved ones confirmed the death of Holocaust survivor Alexander Kleytman. His wife, Larisa, described the terrifying moments when gunfire erupted and people dropped to the ground. She said he moved closer to shield her, choosing closeness over fear.

Meanwhile, New South Wales Police secured an extensive crime scene and continued their inquiries. Officials also said they had no reports of related incidents elsewhere in Sydney. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the scenes “shocking and distressing.” He urged nearby residents to follow NSW Police updates as authorities confirm more details.
